Manual Update Operations
To update ATM microcode and picocode, authorized service personnel can perform manual updates
(such as replacing the flash EEPROM or updating the FPGA) by following these steps:
1. Remove an ATM module and update the microcode manually.
2. Replace the failing component in the module and then re-insert the module in the hub.
3. Enter the RESET ATM_SUBSYSTEM command to reboot all ATM modules.
Out-of-band Operations
ATM network administrators can update workgroup switch microcode (but not ATM media modules) using
an out-of-band operation with an RS-232 plug. To do this, you must attach a workstation (with an
emulated VT-100 protocol installed) to the ATM Workgroup Switch.
After locating the directory where the microcode updates are stored, use the workstation as the
configuration console. Log on using the administrator password and enter the following commands:
1. MAINTAIN (to activate Maintenance mode)
2. DOWNLOAD OUT_OF_BAND (to specify boot or operational code and to load it in the flash
EEPROM of the workgroup switch). Start the file transfer in the workstation using X-modem
protocol. The transfer takes about 6 minutes (boot microcode) or 30 minutes (operational microcode)
at 9600 bps.
If you enter DOWNLOAD OUT_OF_BAND BOOT, you automatically quit Maintenance mode and
activate the new microcode. (Boot code is automatically activated, but operational code still needs a
SWAP command to be activated.)
3. BOOT (to restore normal operation), if you did not enter DOWNLOAD OUT_OF_BAND BOOT in
Step 2.
