Problems with Configuring Ports
If the ATM Workgroup Switch, configuration console and all Expansion Unit modules are operational
(
connected
,
HARDWARE OKAY
, and
NORMAL
displayed with SHOW MODULE ALL VERBOSE), the cause of
the problem may be due to an inoperational ATM port.
To see if the ATM ports on the Base Unit and on Expansion Unit modules are functioning correctly, use
the SHOW MODULE and SHOW PORT commands to display port status. Any of the following types of
port status may appear:
Ÿ UNKNOWN
Ÿ ERROR
Ÿ NO ACTIVITY
Ÿ NOT IN SERVICE
Ÿ OKAY
Ÿ OKAY PVC-ONLY
The problem associated with each port status (except OKAY ) and the action to take to correct it are listed
below.
If, after trying to solve the problem, the status of ATM media ports does not change to OKAY , perform the
Wrap test as described in the IBM 8285/8260: ATM Command Reference Guide. For assistance, contact
your IBM service representative.
Status: UNKNOWN
Explanation: Port status is not available because port is not reachable.
Steps to Take:
1. Use the SHOW MODULE command to check if the Expansion Unit module is connected to the ATM Workgroup
Switch.
2. If the Expansion Unit module is:
Ÿ Not connected, use the SET MODULE command to set the network parameter to connected .}
Ÿ Connected, reset it using the RESET MODULE command.
3. Reset the workgroup switch using the RESET ATM_SUBSYSTEM command.
4. If the problem persists on ports 1-12 on the Base Unit, replace the failing ports. Possible failing parts: 25Mbps
4-Port Expansion or mother board.
5. If the problem persists only on port 1.13, replace the 155Mbps ATM I/O Card.
6. If the problem persists only on an Expansion Unit module, refer to the documentation of the specific module for
troubleshooting procedures.
Status: ERROR
Explanation: An internal error is detected on the port.
Steps to Take:
1. Same as for ‘UNKNOWN’.
