Problems with ATM Ports Attached to ATM Devices
After you attach ATM devices to ATM media ports, the status of the ports may still not change to
OKAY
(ready for ATM traffic). To diagnose this type of Phase 3 problem, use the SHOW PORT VERBOSE
command (described in the
IBM 8285/8260: ATM Command Reference Guide) to display the status of
each port. Any of the following types of port status may appear:
Ÿ NO ACTIVITY
Ÿ NOT IN SERVICE
Ÿ OKAY
Ÿ OKAY PVC-ONLY
Ÿ ACN MISMATCH
Ÿ MISCONFIGURED
The problem associated with each port status (except OKAY ) and the action to take to correct it are listed
below.
The status of an SSI or UNI port is NOT IN SERVICE .
Steps to Take:
1. Refer to “Problems with Configuring Ports” on page 159.
2. Make sure that the attached ATM device is operating properly (for example, the daemon is running).
3. Make sure the cable to an attached workstation was not removed, or that the workstation was powered-off, without
disabling the port first. If so, disable and then re-enable the port.
4. Check the ATM address registration as described in “Problems with ATM Address Registration” on page 164.
5. Perform the wrap test described in “ATM Port Wrap Tests” on page 161, using the WRAP EXTERNAL command.
A workstation with a Turboways* 25 ATM adapter is attached to the port, and the status of a port is
NO ACTIVITY .
Steps to Take: Make sure that the device is correctly installed:
1. Refer to “Problems with Configuring Ports” on page 159.
2. Make sure that the adapter is securely plugged into the port.
3. Make sure that the cable is securely plugged into the adapter.
4. If the adapter is an older model, check whether the wiring conforms to ATM Forum specifications. If not, the
device must be cabled with special twisted-pair cable for non-ATM Forum compliant devices (see “Twisted-Pair
Cable” on page 189 for further information.)
5. Make sure that the device driver is correctly installed by de-installing it and re-installing a new one.
