STEERING DRIVE
36. Install roller bearings (40) and spacer (83) in planet carrier (33) so that one roller bearing is
45.75
±
0.8 [mm] below the thrust bearing counterbore surface and the second bearing is
2.54
±
0.25 [mm] below the thrust bearing counterbore surface (refer to Fig. 7E.27).
37. Slowly lower the carrier assembly into housing (67), being sure the splines of planet carrier
(33) mesh with the splines of the friction discs (20) and planet gears (39) mesh with gear (47).
38. Position brake plate retainer (22) on main housing (67) so the port on the retainer is in line with
the port on housing (67).
NOTE:
Thoroughly oil all of the internally splined friction discs with same oil as used in the main
frame prior to assembling them in the retainer.
39. Install spacers (A, Fig. 7E.24) in holes of clutch plates (82). Alternately install one externally
splined clutch plate (82) and one internally splined friction disc (81) in brake plate retainer (22).
Start from externally splined clutch plate (82). While installing externally splined clutch plate
(82) note that every other plate is to be displaced 60 [º] in relation to the proceeding plate so
that tabs of two successive externally splined plates form an entire circumference.
40. Install O-rings (16 and 18) and brake piston seal rings (17 and 19) on brake piston (15) as
shown in Fig. 7E.18. Install brake piston (15) on brake plate retainer (22).
41. Position low range clutch plate retainer (13) on top of brake plate retainer (22). Secure both
retainers to housing (67) and torque bolts with washer to 108 [Nm].
42. Oil friction discs (10) (refer to
NOTE
above). Install spacers (A, Fig. 7E.24) in holes of clutch
plates (11). Alternately install one externally splined clutch plate (11) and one internally splined
friction disc (10) in low range clutch plate retainer (13). Start from externally splined clutch
plate (11). While installing externally splined clutch plate (11) note that every other plate is to
be displaced 60 [º] in relation to the proceeding plate so that tabs of two successive externally
splined plates form an entire circumference.
43. Position brake piston return springs (14) on brake piston (15).
44. Shims (80) may be required behind the spring (12). To determine if necessary, and how many,
proceed as follows:
a). Place four clutch springs (12) into the four pockets with tapped holes in center of the low
range clutch plate retainer (13).
b). Place the low range clutch piston (9) over the springs (12). Thread four studs
3/8”-16 UNC x 3 1/2” (A, Fig. 7E.28), into four of the pockets 90 [
°
] apart. Screw the studs
approximately 9.5 [mm] into the retainer. Using a washer and a nut, pull the piston against
the clutch pack. Torque the nuts to 13.6 [Nm].
c). Determine the average distance (B, Fig. 7E.29) between the low range clutch piston (9)
and the low range clutch plate retainer (13). To obtain this figure, use a depth gauge
(A, Fig. 7E.29) to measure the distance C from the outer edge of the piston to the retainer in
two places.
C
1
+ C
2
= C
2
Then remove the piston (9) and measure the piston thickness D with a micrometer in two
places.
D
1
+ D
2
= D
2
Subtract the piston thickness D from the total distance. C – D = B
