TRANSMISSION
40. Place the shaft in a suitable stand so that the splined end is up.
41. Install new O-ring (23) and seal ring (22) on clutch piston (20) and install piston on hub (26).
42. Install spring retainer plate (13) and sleeve (12) on shaft (1). Install fourteen springs (10) and
spring retainer plate (11).
43. Compress springs (10) by pressing down on plate (11) with C clamps as shown in Fig. 7C.37
and install retaining ring (9).
44. Alternately install one internally splined friction disc (18) and one externally splined separator
plate (19) in drum (26). There are thirteen friction discs (18) and twelve plates (19) used in this
clutch pack.
IMPORTANT: The internally splined friction discs must be thoroughly oiled (with same oil as used
in the transmission) prior to assembling in the drum. Because the facing is porous and absorbs oil,
a light oiling with an oil can may not be sufficient. Whenever possible, the plates must be soaked
for at least two minutes, in a container of clean transmission oil. If facilities are not available for
soaking, a heavy oiling on both surfaces may be sufficient.
45. Install clutch support plate (14) with retaining ring (15). Install retaining ring (9) and thrust
bearing (6) with thrust races (5).
46. Position forward driver gear (27) over the end of the shaft (1). Be sure all the internally splined
discs (18) are aligned in drum (26) and that the gear meshes with all the discs.
47. Install bearing (7) in the bore of gear (27).
48. Reassemble thrust bearing (6) with thrust races (5).
49. Heat bearing cone (28) to 135 [°C] for 45 minutes and install on the shaft (1) until it bottoms.
To assure cone is seated, keep pressure against the cone until it cools down a few seconds.
50. Install seal rings (29) on the shaft (1).
51. Turn the shaft assembly over in the stand so that the splined end is down.
52. Install new O-ring (25) and new seal ring (24) on hub (21). Install new O-ring (23) and seal ring
(22) on clutch piston (20) and install the piston in drum (26).
53. Reassemble component parts (9, 13, 12A, 12, 10 and 11) in sequence indicated.
54. Compress springs (10) by pressing down on plate (11) with C clamps as shown in Fig. 7C.38
and install retaining ring (9).
