STEERING DRIVE
14. Press cone of tapered bearing (78) on pinion shaft gear (79) until it bottoms. Insert pinion shaft
gear (79) in flange end of pinion gear housing (76). Place the assembly in a press and install
cone of tapered bearing (75) on the shaft. If necessary, use a drift to drive the tapered bearing
cone (75) far enough past the retaining ring groove to permit installation of spacer (74), thrust
race (73) and retaining ring (72).
15. Install thrust race (73) and one retaining ring (72) out of five types available.
NOTE:
Steps 16 and 17 are optional methods of checking pinion shaft gear rolling torque.
16.
I Method:
Wrap a cord around the 203 [mm] diameter of pinion gear housing (76) and attach
a spring scale as shown in Fig.7E.20. Take a reading of the drag (newtons pull) needed
to start the housing rolling. A reading 0 – 29.5 [N] should be obtained. If the reading is higher,
a smaller retaining ring (72) must be installed. If the reading is lower, a larger retaining ring
(72) must be installed.
17.
II Method:
Pinion gear shaft adjustment procedure.

a). Refer to Fig. 7E.20A for pinion gear shaft assy position on an installation table. Measure
the initial pinion gear shaft (79) rolling torque with a 1.249.0017 tool equipped with
a 1.264.0024 socket. The rolling torque should range between 0.5 to 6 [Nm]. If the initial
rolling torque reading falls outside this range, press the bearing (75) in until the correct
reading is achieved.
