STEERING DRIVE
11. Remove parts (25 through 83) as an assembly. Set the assembly on the bench with output
shaft sleeve (27) up.
12. Remove the bolts securing sleeve retaining washer (25). Pull output shaft sleeve (27) together
with sleeve retaining washer (25) and sleeve retaining ring (26) off the shaft of planet carrier
(33). Remove sleeve retaining washer (25) from output shaft sleeve (27). Sleeve retaining ring
(26) need not be removed unless replacement is necessary.
13. Pull sun gear hub (32) together with parts (28 through 31) off the shaft of planet carrier (33).
14. Remove bearing retainer ring (28) from sun gear hub (32). Place the sun gear hub (32) in
a press with sun gear (31) up and press sun gear (31), together with ball bearing (29) and
retaining ring (30), out of sun gear hub (32). Remove retaining ring (30) from sun gear (31).
15. To remove the planet gear (39), remove the bolts with washers securing planet gear bearing
scoop (35) and remove the scoop. Turn planet carrier (33) over and drive planet gear shaft
(36) from planet gear (39) and planet carrier (33). When removing shaft (36), be careful not to
lose chrome steel ball (34). Slide planet gear (39) to the outside, placing one hand under the
gear as the thrust washers (37) and planet gear bearing (38) are free to drop out. Remove
planet gear bearing (38) from planet gear (39).
16. Remove the two remaining planet gears (39) from the planet carrier (33) in the same manner
as described in Step 15.
17. Remove clutch hub roller bearings (40) and bearing spacer (84) from planet carrier (33).
18. Remove clutch hub thrust races (41) and thrust bearing (42) from bevel gear hub (55).

Fig. 7E.13. Removing Spring Retaining Ring
19. Install three bolts 3/8”-16UNC through in return spring retainer (44) and thread them into the
tapped holes in high range clutch piston (49). Tighten bolts to compress springs (45 and 46)
and remove return spring retaining ring (43) and shims (84) (if equipped) (Fig. 7E.13). Evenly
release the spring tension and remove the bolts.
20. Remove return spring retainer (44) and springs (45 and 46).
21. Remove bolts securing ring gear (47) and ring gear adapter (48) to clutch plate retainer (56).
Remove ring gear (47), adapter (48), clutch plates (21) and friction discs (20).
22. Thread two eye bolts 3/8”-16UNC into the tapped holes in high range clutch piston (49) as
shown in Fig. 7E.14 and remove the piston.
23. Turn the assembly over and repeat Steps 1 through 22 on the left side.
