ENGINE REPAIRING
ENGINE TROUBLE SHOOTING
Cause Remedy
ENGINE FALLS TO START
Before looking for reasons of difficult engine starting check for
fuel in fuel tank and whether suction fuel line cock is open.
Starter turns crankshaft
slowly or does not at all
Check charging and general condi-
tion of storage batteries and, if nec-
essary, charge or replace them
Check contacts in starter supply
circuit, if necessary, clean contacts
and tighten wire terminals
Check condition of starter solenoid
switch contacts and dress them, if
burnt
Check brush - to - commutator con-
tact and lock for jamming of
brushes in holders, if necessary,
wipe and clean commutator and
side surfaces of brushes, replace
worn brushes with new ones or
replace faulty brush springs.
Replace starter if troubles cannot be
remedied.
Clogging of fuel lines or
fuel suction strainer in tank Wash suction strainer, wash and
air-blast fuel lines
Water freezing in fuel lines
or on suction strainer screen
of fuel tank Warm up fuel lines, filters and tank
cautiously
Thickening of fuel in pipe-
lines Replace fuel by another, appropri-
ate to a season, and prime the sys-
tem
