By visual inspection make certain that the pipelines, lubrica-
tion system units, fuel feed and cooling systems are leak-proof.

Check the tension of the alternator drive belts.

For starting of the cold engine at ambient air temperatures
below 10
o
C it is necessary to use the electric pilot-flame pre-
heater. With that device it is possible to start the engine without
pre-heating at temperatures down to minus 20
o
C. At lower tem-
peratures warm up the engine with the start preheating system.
ENGINE STARTING
Set the governor shut-off lever 5 (fig. 50) into position "B" -
corresponding to the fuel supply-on, and the governor control lever 3 -
into position "A", which corresponds to minimum rotational speed.
When starting engine in winter it is recommended to put the
control lever into the mid- position.
To start the engine, depress the starter button; as soon as the
engine begins to run steadily, release the button. The duration of con-
tinuous operation of the starter should not exceed 10 seconds at posi-
tive temperature and 20 seconds at negative temperature. If through the
specified time the engine does not begin to work steadily, switch off
the starter and repeat starting in 1-2 minutes.
If after three attempts the engine does not begin running, it is
necessary to find and eliminate the fault.
After unsuccessful starting in the winter time turn the shut-off
lever into the position of switched-off fuel supply, then into on-work
position and after that repeat starting.
