Replacing the Lamps
As lamps age, there is a reduction in light output that results in
increased baseline noise. If the noise level on your detector’s output
signal is increasing and cleaning the flowcell doesn’t help, determine
the condition of the lamps. Check the light intensities from the
Instrument Status section of the software. If a large decrease in light
intensity is observed, adjust the attenuators to increase light
throughput (refer to
Adjusting Attenuators
on page 4-16). If light
intensities are still unacceptable, use the following procedure to
change the appropriate lamp. Lamps are pre-aligned. The deuterium
(D2) and tungsten - halogen (W) lamps are located in the lamp
compartment to the right of the optical bench assembly, (viewed with
the detector chassis open as shown in Figure 4.5).
To access the deuterium and tungsten - halogen lamps:
1.
Turn the power switch at the front of the detector to off
(released position) and disconnect the power cord from the rear
panel.
2.
Remove the front cover by gently pulling out on the bottom of
the cover and lifting up.
3.
Remove the LightPipe assembly and secure its location.
CAUTION! Intense UV light can damage your eyes! Always
disconnect the power cord before exposing the lamp and always
allow sufficient time for the lamp to cool before removing it, as it
gets quite hot when lit.
4.
To access the lamp compartment cover, loosen the two captive
3/16” Phillips screws that secure the chassis in place. These
screws are in a recessed location in the base of the detector
(Figure 4.8). The screws are spring loaded and will be retained
when loosened.
5.
Slide the chassis out of the detector case until the metal lamp
compartment cover is accessible from the right side of the
instrument (Figure 4.9).
