Using the Bar Code Reader
The FOMA terminal can use its built-in camera to scan JAN codes and QR codes. The scanned data can then be
used for displaying, copying text, it can be stored in the Phonebook or as a bookmark, or used in functions such as
Phone To (AV Phone To), Mail To, Web To and i-
α
ppli To. You can even use the FOMA terminal’s camera to scan,
play and save images and melody files.

The FOMA terminal can store up to 5 scanned bar codes.
● Hold the FOMA terminal firmly to ensure that it does not shake during scanning. You can reduce shaking by holding your
hand under the FOMA terminal or by placing the FOMA terminal on a magazine.
●
When scanning bar codes, use the rear camera and hold the FOMA terminal about 6 to 8 cm from the scanned code.
● For quicker and easier access to the bar code reader, add its desktop icon to the stand-by display.

JAN codes and QR codes
● What is a JAN code?
This is a bar code that uses vertical lines (bars) of varying thicknesses and spacings to
represent numbers. The FOMA terminal can scan both 8-digit (JAN8) and 13-digit
(JAN13) bar codes.

What is a QR code?
QR codes are a type of two-dimensional bar code that uses horizontal and vertical patterns to
represent numbers, letters, kanji characters, kana characters and pictographs. When QR codes
are used to handle images or i-melody data, one set of data can be split among two or more QR
codes.

Position the JAN code or QR code in the recognition field.

Focus the image and center the JAN code or QR code so that it falls entirely inside the
recognition field.

Note
● The Auto timer cannot be used when continuous mode is set to Manual mode.
● The Auto timer turns “OFF” in the following situations:
・ When Auto Timer shooting ends
・ When you switch from automatic to manual photography in continuous mode
・ When you exit the Camera function
