Module removal and switch behavior considerations
29
If the system is in default or M mode with SF/CPU 1 as Master and
SF/CPU 2 as Secondary, and you enable R mode on SF/CPU 1, save
the configuration and reboot, then SF/CPU 2 comes up as Master and
SF/CPU 1 as Secondary. If you then enable R mode on the new Master
(SF/CPU 2), the Secondary (SF/CPU 1) goes and remains offline.
To configure QoS and filters for R and RS modules, see Nortel Ethernet
Routing Switch Configuration — QoS and Filtering for R and RS Modules,

Chassis slots and modules
Slots in the 8010 and 8006 chassis are numbered from the top, starting
with slot 1. Slots in the 8010co chassis are numbered from left to right,
starting with slot 1.
In the 8010co, 8010, and 8006 chassis, slots 5 and 6 are reserved for
SF/CPU modules. You can install any of the supported Ethernet Routing
Switch 8600 modules in the remaining chassis slots.
You can add or replace a module with the switch power on or off.
Module removal and switch behavior considerations
If you remove or replace a module in your chassis, you can expect the
following results:
•
If you replace a module with a different type of module, the system
discards the configuration of the old ports and adds the new ports to
either the default VLAN or a null VLAN, depending on the operating
mode of the switch.
•
If you remove an interface module from an operating switch and
replace it with the same type of module, the system restores the
configuration.
•
If you save the configuration in nonvolatile random access memory
(NVRAM), turn off the switch, replace a module with a different type
of module, and turn the system on again, the system discards the
configuration of the old ports and then adds new ports to either the
default VLAN or an unassigned VLAN, depending on the operating
mode of the switch.
The ability of the switch to load configuration files for modules depends on
if the module is present in the chassis. By design, configuration files do not
completely load if the module is not installed.
If you boot the switch without modules installed and want to completely
load the configuration files, you can either:
