Setup and Operation 2-33
When to Use the ECU
Run the ECU the first time you set up your system and any time you add, remove, or move
an EISA or ISA board in the computer. You must physically install the boards in the com-
puter and add the configuration information stored in the computer by the ECU.
NOTE:
You must install an EISA, PCI, or Plug
and Play board or device
before
running the
ECU utility. If installing a non-Plug and Play
ISA board, it must be installed
after
running the
ECU utility.
Use the ECU to :
n
change or check system parameters when you add, move, or remove an expan-
sion board.
n
print out the required settings of a particular board or option.
n
correct a hardware discrepancy when the Power-On Self-Test (POST) displays
an “Invalid EISA Configuration Storage - RUN ECU” error message and
prompts you to run the ECU program.
n
boot the system and check parameters when you have a problem booting the
system.
n
change functions and resources of boards installed in the system.
n
resolve a resource conflict when adding a board or changing a board function or
resource.
n
lock and unlock boards in the configuration.
n
maintain the ECU Utility diskette.
n
set system parameters when the real time clock (RTC)/battery module is re-
placed.
How to Load the ECU
Use the following steps to load the ECU.
1.
With the system power off, insert the NEC EISA Configuration Utility diskette
into diskette drive A.
The ECU requires a
cold
boot
each
time you load it.
2.
Power on the system. After performing its Power-On Self-Test, the system loads
and starts the ECU. An ECU preparation screen appears followed by the NEC
logo screen and the Main Menu (see Figure Section 2-4).
