The MPC885 receives ATM cells in two stages. The UTOPIA controller first reads the cell into the
two-cell FIFO. Then, the CPM reads the cell from the FIFO, performs the ATM and SAR layers, and places
the cell data directly into external memory.
The transmit operation is also done in two stages. In the first, the CPM reads a cell’s payload from external
memory, performs the SAR and ATM layers and writes the cell into the transmitter’s cell FIFO. In the
second stage the cell is sent by the UTOPIA controller on the UTOPIA bus.
43.3.1
UTOPIA Split Bus
The UTOPIA split bus (UTMODE[SPLIT] = 1) allows the user to operate with a split UTOPIA data bus
(separate RxData and TxData) and two SOC signals (RxSOC and TxSOC) as defined in the UTOPIA level
2 specification. The UTOPIA split bus can be used for UTOPIA master (ATM side) mode or slave (PHY
side) mode.

43.3.2
UTOPIA Muxed Bus (Master Operation Only)
The UTOPIA muxed bus (UTMODE[SPLIT] = 0) operates as a single 8-bit UTOPIA data bus (UTPB on
port D pins) with a single SOC signal (SOC on port D pins). The MPC885 controls, as a master, the
direction of transfer with no simultaneous receive and transmit transactions allowed. The UTOPIA bus is
capable of operating at 50 Mhz, which enables transfers of up to 400Mbps on this common bus. This
capacity is sufficient in most cases to offer both receive and transmit on the same bus where RxClav
requests have priority over TxClav requests.
In muxed bus mode, the user may use the PCMCIA port A pins. Slave mode is not supported in UTOPIA
muxed bus. The example in
Figure 43-3
demonstrates the UTOPIA muxed bus.
