You do not have to be connected to a network to make your changes, or to open or edit worksets. This
is useful for team members who work offsite and access the central file remotely.
WARNING
Working offline can put your project at risk.
See
on page 1269.
Creating a Local Copy of the Central File
It is good practice to create a local copy of the central file every day. Creating a new local copy ensures a
local copy is always on your hard drive each time you begin modifying a project.
Creating a Local Copy of a Central File from the Open Dialog
1
Click
➤
Open.
2
In the Open dialog, navigate to the folder where the central project file resides and select it.
This procedure cannot be used for multiple files at one time.
3
Verify that Create New Local is selected in the worksharing section.
NOTE
If you select Detach from Central, then Create New Local will be cleared. Clear both options
to open the central file itself instead of a copy.
4
Click Open.
If you are already working in the central file, use Save As to create a local copy.
Creating a Local Copy from an Open Central File
1
Click
➤
Save As.
2
In the Save As dialog, navigate to the desired location on your local network or your hard drive.
3
Enter a name for the file, and click Save.
Editing Workshared Projects
When using a workshared project, you can edit individual elements, or you can edit worksets. When you
checkout an individual element or a whole workset, the elements are visible to other users, but are not
editable until you relinquish the borrowed element or workset.
When you request to borrow an element that is not owned by anyone, permission to edit the element is
automatically granted. If you need to modify an element that is owned by another team member, you can
request to borrow just that element.
NOTE
To edit an element or a workset, they must be up-to-date. If you attempt to edit an element or a workset
that is not up-to-date, you are prompted to update your local copy of the central file, so that you have all of the
latest changes.
