Handling streaming audio and video
The security gateway supports the Real-time Streaming Protocol (RTSP), which provides a transport
mechanism for audio and video data. Support is provided through the security gateway’s included
RTSP proxy. You should configure the RTSP proxy if you want to let users gain access to audio and
video stream feeds.
How the security gateway handles streaming audio and video traffic
The Real-time Streaming Protocol (RTSP) proxy handles real-time audio and video data produced by
applications such as RealPlayer and QuickTime. Sources of data can include both live data feeds and
stored clips. The RTSP specification (RFC 2326) establishes and controls either single or several time-
synchronized streams of continuous media such as audio and video. It does not typically deliver the
continuous streams itself. Rather, RTSP acts as a network remote control for multimedia servers.
There is no notion of an RTSP connection; instead, a server maintains a session labeled by an
identifier. An RTSP session is in no way tied to a transport-level connection such as a TCP connection.
During an RTSP session, an RTSP client may open and close many reliable transport connections to the
server to issue RTSP requests. Alternatively, it may use a connectionless transport protocol such as
UDP.
While the RTSP protocol is intentionally similar in syntax and operation to HTTP, an RTSP server
needs to maintain its state by default in almost all cases, as opposed to the stateless nature of HTTP.
Configuring access for streaming audio and video traffic
Configuring access for RTSP traffic makes it possible for applications like RealPlayer to stream audio
and video to hosts on the protected network. Once configured, all traffic passes through the RTSP
proxy, where it is examined for RFC compliancy before being allowed. Once the security gateway is
configured and the configuration activated, RTSP traffic can pass.
Prerequisites
None.
Configure access for streaming audio and video traffic
To configure access for streaming audio and video traffic, you must do the following:
■
Ensure the RTSP proxy is enabled
■
Create an RTSP service group
■
Create an allow rule for RTSP traffic
To ensure that the RTSP proxy is enabled
1
In the SGMI, in the left pane, under Assets, click
Proxies
.
2
In the right pane, in the Proxies table, click
RTSPD
, and then click
Properties
.
