Loss
An event where the level
of reflected light suddenly
decreases, and the
reflection from the event is
too small to measure.
Caused by a splice, bend, or a low-reflectance
connection, such as an angled physical contact
(APC) connection.
You can use the
Change Event Type
menu to
edit loss events. See “How to Edit a Loss
Event” on page 481.
You can use the
OTDR Trace Viewer
in
LinkWare PC to label loss events as splices, APC
connectors, or splitters.
The tester uses the loss limit for a splice
(typically 0.30 dB) to give a
PASS
or
FAIL
result
to a loss event. A good APC connection that
has a higher loss than a splice will have a
FAIL
result. To change this result to a
PASS
, use
LinkWare PC to edit the event in the
OTDR
Trace Viewer
.
If the loss event is not caused by a splice or
APC connection, inspect the cable for tight
bends, especially if the loss is more at a higher
wavelength. If
Macrobend Detection
is
On
tester can identify bends.
When the tester uses a narrower pulse width,
some loss events can show as reflective events.
Bend
A loss event that the tester
identifies as a bend in the
fiber.
The tester identifies loss events as bends when
these three conditions are true:
The event has more loss at higher
wavelengths.
The difference between the losses at two
wavelengths (such as 1310 nm and 1550 nm)
is more than the macrobend threshold. See
“Macrobend Setup” on page 316.
