1) When engine is cool (coolant temperature is below 40
5
C
(104
5
F)), start engine and race it (higher than about 2000 rpm),
and check that EGR valve diaphragm (1) is not operating in this
state.
CAUTION:
If EGR valve is hot, it may be necessary to wear gloves
to avoid burning fingers.
1
2) Warm up engine to normal operating temperature and race it af-
ter warming up. Then check to be sure that diaphragm (1)
moves toward “A” in the figure during acceleration and toward
“B” during deceleration.
If EGR valve fails to operate properly, check vacuum hoses,
EGR valve, EGR back pressure transducer (2) and EGR sole-
noid vacuum valve.
“A”
“B”

3) Keep engine running at idle speed and open EGR valve by
hand, and engine should either stop or reduce its speed.
If neither occurs, EGR passage is clogged. Clean it.
EGR BACK PRESSURE TRANSDUCER
INSPECTION
1) Check filter (1) for contamination and damage.
Using compressed air, clean filter.
1
2) Remove EGR back pressure transducer (1) and plug nozzle
with finger. Blow air into another nozzle and check that air
passes through to air filter side (2) freely.
