Advanced Airbag
Your vehicle is equipped with capacitance occu-
pant sensing for the front passenger seat in ac-
cordance with U.S. Federal Motor Vehicle Safety
Standard 208.
The components of the advanced passenger air-
bag system include a capacitance occupant sens-
ing system for the front passenger seat and a
PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF/ON
indicator light.
The system measures the electrical capacitance
acting on the seat to determine whether the front
passenger airbag should be switched on or off.
Depending on the angle and force of impact, only a
passenger airbag that is switched-on by the ca-
pacitance system will be triggered during a colli-
sion. You can determine the on/off status of the
passenger airbag system from the indicator lamp
on the overhead console.
>
Please see chapter "Automatic deactivation of
the passenger airbag" on page 50.
If the front passenger airbag is turned on, the
PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF
indicator light will go
out and the
PASSENGER AIR BAG ON
indicator
light is continuously illuminated when the ignition is
switched on and/or the engine is running. If the
PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF
indicator light stays
illuminated, the passenger airbag will not deploy.
DANGER
Improper Use of Front
Passenger Seat
Improper use of the front passenger seat can un-
intentionally impair operation of capacitance occu-
pant sensing for the passenger’s airbag.
If the electrical capacitance of an adult on the pas-
senger's seat is not properly maintained, the
passenger's airbag may be switched off.
e
Always make sure that there is nothing on the
front passenger seat that could cause the ca-
pacitance occupant sensing system to judge
that the seat is occupied by a person when it is
not.
e
Never use cushions, pillows, blankets or similar
items on the front passenger seat. The addi-
tional layers prevent the capacitance occupant
sensing for the front passenger seat from ac-
curately measuring the capacitance of the child
restraint system and/or the person on the seat
and thus keep the advanced airbag system
from working properly.
e
Never place or use any electrical device (such
as a cell phone, tablet, laptop, CD player, elec-
tronic games device or power inverter) on the
front passenger seat if the device is connected
to the cigarette lighter socket. Such device can
influence the capacitance registered by the ca-
pacitance occupant sensing for the front pas-
senger seat, so that incorrect information is
provided to the airbag control unit.
DANGER
Risk of serious personal injury or death due to the
passenger airbag triggering unintentionally.
e
If the front passenger seat gets wet, dry it
immediately.
e
If liquid soaks into the front passenger seat,
this can keep the airbag system from working
properly and may, for instance, deactivate or
activate the passenger frontal airbag. If this
happens, the
PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF/ON
indicator light and the airbag warning light on
the instrument cluster may come on.
e
If liquid is pooled on the front passenger seat,
but has not soaked in, this may also keep the
capacitance occupant sensing for the front
passenger seat from working properly and
cause the passenger frontal airbag to be en-
abled (turned on), even though there is a prop-
erly installed child restraint system on the seat.
Wet towels or other wet things on the seat
cushion can have the same effect.
WARNING
Improper Front Passen-
ger Seating
Improper use of the front passenger seat can un-
intentionally impair operation of capacitance occu-
pant sensing for the passenger’s airbag.
If the electrical capacitance of an adult on the front
passenger seat is not properly maintained, the
passenger's airbag may be switched off.
e
Select an upright seat position, and do not
support weight on the armrests or center con-
sole, or lean out of the window while driving.
e
Always keep feet positioned on the floor in the
footwell while driving. Do not put feet on the
dashboard or the seat area.
Adjusting the front seats
WARNING
Reclining Seatback
Seat belts only offer protection when the backrest
is positioned at an upright seating angle and the
belts are properly positioned on the body.
e
Do not operate the vehicle with the driver or
passenger backrests excessively reclined.
