Shifting gears on the steering wheel allows you to
switch temporarily from automatic shifting mode
D
to manual shifting mode M .
Example:
– Downshifting before bends or when entering
built-up areas
– Downshifting when driving downhill (engine
braking effect)
– Downshifting for short bursts of speed
The manual selection mode remains engaged:
– During overrun
– When the vehicle is stationary, e.g. at a junction
Manual shifting mode is terminated again:
– Automatically after around 6 seconds (not in
overrun)
M – Manual shifting mode

The shift paddles on the steering wheel or the se-
lector lever allow you to select the eight forward
gears comfortably and reliably.

Press the selector lever from position D to M .
The currently engaged gear is retained when you
change from
D to M .
If you change from M to D , the gear-changing map
suitable for your current driving style is selected
and the appropriate gear is engaged.

Pull selector lever or right shift paddle back.
Shifting down using the selector lever or the
left "–" shift paddle

ACC or cruise control is not active

Pull both gearshift paddles simultaneously,
then release them immediately.
The transmission releases the clutch. The vehicle
then rolls in neutral with the engine disengaged
and without engine braking. The number in the
gear display goes out and the last activated oper-
ating mode (
D or M ) flashes. The clutch is engaged
again by pulling one of the shift paddles or by ac-
tuating the selector lever.

The consumption-orientated upshift indicator A
helps the driver develop a fuel-saving driving style.
Depending on the selected gear, engine speed and
accelerator pedal position, the upshift indicator
lights up, prompting you to shift to a higher gear.

Shift to the next-higher gear when the upshift
indicator lights up.
Actuating the kick-down function
The kickdown function is active in mode D .

For optimum acceleration, e.g., when overtak-
ing, depress the accelerator pedal quickly as
far as it will go (kick-down).
Depending on the driving speed and the engine
speed, the transmission will downshift. Upshifting
takes place at the highest possible engine speeds.
Driving in coasting mode

Coasting is driving with the engine disengaged at
