Traffic Jam Assist (TJA)
Traffic Jam Assist supports the driver when driving
in traffic jam situations or in slow-moving traffic in a
speed range below approx. 40 mph (65 km/h).
Traffic Jam Assist helps to maintain the vehicle in a
lane calculated by the system. Within the system
limits, the system automatically steers the vehicle
when ACC is switched on.
Because Traffic Jam Assist is an assistance sys-
tem, the driver must always keep his hands on the
steering wheel and be ready to steer the vehicle.
The driver can override the assistance system by
means of a steering intervention at any time.
The system is designed for driving on highways
and well-surfaced country roads. Never use Traffic
Jam Assist in urban traffic.
Switching Traffic Jam Assist on and
off
Traffic Jam Assist can be switched on and off in the
PCM.

Traffic Jam Assist
When the system is switched on, Traffic Jam Assist
can be activated/deactivated together with the
adaptive cruise control via the ACC lever. Please
see chapter "Operating adaptive cruise control
(ACC)" on page 32.
When ACC is activated, the Traffic Jam Assist sta-
tus display is shown on the instrument cluster.

Display Meaning
Traffic Jam Assist is switched on
but passive. No lateral control
takes place.
Traffic Jam Assist is switched on
and active. Vehicles in front are
detected and all further conditions
are met. The vehicle performs
control interventions.
Information
If Lane Keep Assist is active simultaneously, a
Traffic Jam Assist symbol may appear in-
stead of the Lane Keep Assist symbol be-
cause the system that was last switched on in the
PCM is displayed on the instrument cluster.

The driver's steering behavior is monitored when
Traffic Jam Assist is on. If there is no steering ac-
tivity, a warning appears after a short time on the
instrument cluster.
The system prompts the driver to actively take
over the steering by means of an acoustic warning
and a text message on the instrument cluster.
If the driver does not respond to this within a given
time, Traffic Jam Assist switches to a passive
mode (see status display/system states). In this
case, the system can decelerate the vehicle to a
standstill. During this deceleration, an acoustic
warning sounds and a visible warning appears on
the instrument cluster.

Lack of attention and
changed environmental
conditions
The Traffic Jam Assist is designed for use on high-
ways and well-surfaced country roads only. The in-
creased comfort offered by Traffic Jam Assist
should not induce you to risk your safety. Respon-
sibility for staying in lane and correctly assessing
the traffic situation always lies with the driver.

Keep your hands on the steering wheel at all
times order to always by ready to steer.

Always be prepared to take over the driving
tasks (accelerating or braking) yourself.
If a warning appears on the instrument cluster,
take over control of the vehicle immediately.

Never use Traffic Jam Assist in the following
situations:
– When increased attention is required on the
part of the driver.
– In adverse weather conditions, e.g. snow, ice
or heavy rain.
– Off-road or on unpaved or slippery roads.
– On winding roads, in roadworks areas or in ur-
ban traffic.
– In narrow lanes.
– In uncertain traffic situations such as intersec-
tions or tollbooths.
