CAUTION
engine to overheat and suffer severe damage.
Check the radiator hoses for cracks or deterioration, and hose clamps for tightness in accordance with
scheduled maintenance requirements.
Radiator and Cooling Fan Inspection
Radiator
CAUTION
Using high pressure water, such as from a pressure-washer, can damage the radiator fins and impair the
radiator's efficiency.
Do not obstruct or deflect airflow through the radiator by installing unauthorised accessories in front of the
radiator or behind the cooling fan. Interference with the radiator airflow can lead to overheating and
consequent engine damage.
Check the radiator for stone damage.
1.
Check the radiator core for damage to fins or obstructions to air flow.
2.
Clean off any obstructions with a stream of low-pressure water.
3.
CAUTION
To avoid overheating and consequent engine damage, replace the radiator if the cores are blocked or if the
fins are badly deformed or broken.
Rectify any damage.
4.
Cooling Fan
WARNING
The cooling fan is turned on or off by the chassis ECM, in response to a request sent by the engine ECM.
The request from the engine ECM to turn the cooling fan on or off, is sent to the chassis ECM in response to
a signal received from the coolant temperature sensor.
To prevent injury, never place loose clothing, fingers or hands near the cooling fan, until the engine is
stopped. Loose clothing, fingers or the hands could become trapped during cooling fan operation and cause
crushing injury to the fingers, hands or other parts of the anatomy.
The motorcycle is fitted with a thermostatically controlled electric fan situated behind the radiator. When the fan
operates with the motorcycle stationary or at slow speed, cool air is drawn through the radiator from the front of
the motorcycle.
Check that the cooling fan spins freely and without tight spots.
1.
Check the cooling fan blades for signs of heat distortion.
2.
Rectify as necessary.
3.
Coolant Level Inspection
WARNING
Do not remove the coolant pressure cap when the engine is hot. When the engine is hot, the coolant inside
the radiator is hot and also under pressure. Contact with hot coolant will cause scalds and skin damage.
