3 CONFIGURATION
The terms configuration and settings are used interchangeably to refer to the set of
data that controls how the unit operates. The data can be modified, saved, retrieved
and transferred in various ways.
3.1 Configuration at Start-Up
When the unit starts up (typically after power is applied) or restarts (typically after a
request from the user interface, see sections 14.5.1 and 14.5.2), the entire unit
configuration is loaded from one of three places.
3.1.1 Cold Start
A cold-start happens when selected via the bit-switches (see section 2.3.5),
requested from the user interface (see section 14.5.2), or when no stored
configuration can be found.
The cold start sets all the configuration data to factory default values, with a small
number of exceptions:
•
Unit MAC address;
•
Unit serial number.
Certain settings may be changed from the factory default values as part of the cold-
start process, according to the settings of the bit-switches. These relate to the basic
settings of the WAN port. Refer to section 2.3 for more details.
The cold start automatically stores the (modified) factor default settings.
3.1.2 Warm Start
A warm start will happen when cold start (see above) is not selected and a stored
configuration is found. The unit will be configured according to the stored settings.
3.2 Configuration Management
3.2.1 Running Configuration
The settings that reflect the current operation of the unit are termed the running
configuration. When the user makes changes to the settings, it is the running
configuration that is changed.
Note
: When the unit is restarted, the running configuration is not automatically
saved.
