5 ACCESS CONTROL
5.1 Basic Password System
The default password system supports one 'Admin' user with rights to view and
control all aspects of the unit operation, and one 'View' user with rights to view most
information but alter nothing.
Login requires a password only (no username). By default, the Admin password is
the product name in lower-case:
nt1003
,
nt1005
or
nt10g05
. The password can
be changed once the user is logged-in, and this is recommended for obvious security
reasons.
The View user password is always
view
. This cannot be changed, but the View user
can be completely disabled, if desired.
Passwords must be a minimum of 4 and a maximum of 32 characters in length, are
case-sensitive, and may contain any printable, non-control characters, ie. all upper-
and lower-case letters and numbers are allowed, plus the following:
(space)
!"#$%&'()*+,-./:;<=>?@[\]^_`{|}~
5.2 Password Recovery
If the unit password is lost, access to the device is possible by cold starting the unit
using the bit switches on the underside of the unit (see section 2.3.5). A cold start
will return the entire unit configuration, including password(s), to factory defaults.
Where a unit is installed in a rack and access to the bit switches is not possible, or in
cases where it is essential to maintain the unit configuration, access is possible with
the assistance of Metrodata technical support, as follows:
At the login password prompt, type Crtl-P. This will cause the unit to issue a
'challenge' (a string of up to 8 characters), which must be conveyed to a technical
support engineer. In return, you will be supplied with a 'response' (another string of
up to 8 characters), which must be entered at the
response:
prompt.
This will permit one-time login access to the unit, allowing a new password to be set.
5.3 User Interface Advanced Mode
The NetTESTER offer a simplified version of the user interface found on the
Metrodata EDD family products. Parts of the EDD functionality that are not normally
relevant to the tester application have been removed. Should they be needed,
however, these hidden functions can still be accessed by switching the user interface
to 'Advanced Mode'. This is done via an option on the access control menu. In this
mode, virtually all the functionality of the corresponding EDD product (see
APPENDIX E) is available.
