The loopback can be selected to operate at one of 3 different 'Layers': 

L2 

All packets addressed to either the 'magic' MAC address or the modified 
unit MAC address will be looped. Source and destination MAC addresses 
will be swapped. 

L3 

All packets addressed to the unmodified MAC address of the unit, that 
carry an IP payload with the Protocol byte matching the selected value 
will be looped. Source and destination MAC and IP addresses will be 
swapped. 

L4 

All packets addressed to the unmodified MAC address of the unit, that 
carry a UDP payload with the destination port matching the selected 
value will be looped. Source and destination MAC and IP addresses, and 
UDP ports will be swapped.

Take care to avoid protocols that are used for management of the unit (eg. UDP, 
TCP) as the loopback effectively block these from reaching the unit's management
