6. Shift lever (20) and drive shaft and clutch group (C)
from the drive housing (39) together, then separate
them.
• Do not remove the bushing plug (40) or bushing
(37) from the drive housing (39) unless replace
ment is necessary. Refer to “ Cleaning, Inspec
tion, and Repair.”
DRIVE SHAFT AND CLUTCH
GROUP
Disassembly of the drive shaft and clutch group is not
required unless it is necessary to clean, inspect, or
replace one or more parts of the group separately.
❖
Disassemble (Figures 7 and 8)
1. Stop rings (26) and pinion stop (36).
A. Position the drive shaft and clutch group on a
work bench with the internal gear end down.
B. Using an open tube slightly larger then the
shaft, drive the pinion stop (36) toward the
clutch drive assem bly (34) until it clears the
stop rings (26) (figure 8).
C. Pry the stop rings out of the drive shaft groove
and slide them off the end of the shaft, being
careful not to scratch the drive shaft (31).
D. Inspect the edges of the shaft groove for burrs
that may have been formed through repeated
cranking cycles. Such burrs may make removal
of the pinion stop and clutch drive assembly
(34) difficult.
• If burrs are found, use a file to carefully
remove burrs only, not the base metal. Thor
oughly clean away metal filings.
E. Slide the pinion stop (36) off the drive shaft
(31). Discard the old pinion stop and stop rings.
New parts must be used at assembly.
2. Clutch drive assem bly (34) from the drive shaft
(31).
3. Drive shaft support (33) from the drive shaft (31).
• Do not remove the bearing (32) from the drive
shaft (31) unless replacement is required. Refer
to “ Cleaning, Inspection, and Repair.”
