2 Before Using AutoRead

AutoRead needs to be installed and configured before it can be used. While installing

AutoRead on a computer is very easy, configuring it can be more complex. Once

configured, however, AutoRead is quite simple to use on a day-to-day basis. The

configuration of AutoRead involves setting up the polling devices (reading devices) and

setting up the import and export formats to match your billing system's route and reading

file layout, as well as adding routes and reports. If on-site start-up training was provided as

part of your AutoRead purchase, please see Section

2.1

for the actions required prior to

onsite training.
Since the configuration process of AutoRead can be complex, it is advisable to contact your

Sales Representative or Sensus Metering Systems Technical Services at 1-800-638-3748

(1-800-METER IT), option 2 before using AutoRead. For users familiar with meter reading

software and billing file interfaces, some configuration information is included in

Appendix B

of this manual.

Appendix B

outlines many of the requirements and available fields that can

be used in AutoRead.
Sensus Metering Systems Technical Services can help your utility get the most from

the AutoRead system, and can offer suggestions for effectively managing your meter

reading process from start to finish. The technical services staff has many years of AMR

experience, and can be of great assistance when setting up a new AMR system, or when

transitioning to the AutoRead system from an existing system. The technical services team

is available from 8 AM to 8 PM EST, Monday through Friday, to answer questions or solve

problems with the software, the HHD or vehicle systems, the PhonRead systems, or the

meters themselves. Again, Sensus Technical Services, AMR Products can be reached at

1-800-638-3748 (1-800- METER IT), option 2.

Utility Actions Required Before AMR Systems Start-

Up Training

Sensus provides up to three consecutive days of Engineering start-up for purchasers of the

Sensus Metering Systems AutoRead System Software and AMR Meter Reading Equipment.

For the training sessions to be productive, utility personnel must complete the following

activities before the visit is scheduled. When using the Sensus RadioRead System, an FCC

license is required.
1. Your personal computer (PC), configured per specifications (for minimum requirements

please see

2.2

) should be received and set up at your utility and verified that it is running

properly.

2. System operators should be given preliminary computer training at a local qualified

training facility. The operators should also be familiar with basic navigational and

functional procedures in a Windows based operating system.

3. You should have received the AutoRead software. Operators should review the

introductory literature and become familiar with the software. This will enable the

Sensus Engineers to concentrate on questions or problems that operators have

identified or on areas of the program on which the operator is unclear.

4. An adequate work area should be established for the Computer /Billing Operator. The

following should be provided:
• A table or desk on which to place the equipment.
• Supplies, including printer paper and computer disks.
