Connect the SCU downlink port of the upper shelf to the SCU uplink port of the
lower shelf. Continue daisy chaining the ports to the remaining shelves. The
connection from shelf to the shelf is through optical Ethernet connection. This
connection is an unprotected link. The disadvantage of the unprotected link is
that in case of inadvertently disconnected optical patch cable all shelves down-
stream of the interruption are unavailable for management. In order to establish
a protected link, a ring can be formed. For this purpose, connect the downlink
port of the SCU in the last main shelf to the uplink port of the SCU in the master
shelf. If the ring is broken at one point, all shelves of the NE can still be reached
by the NCU. The SCU modules involved will detect the broken link and where
necessary, allow the NCU to reach the shelf via another management path.
Therefore, the SCU ring configuration should always be preferred to the unpro-
tected link.
Shelves should be connected in shelf order starting from the master shelf.
ADVA Optical Networking recommends that you label the patch cables (prior to
installation) to and from the corresponding SCU modules at each end of the
fiber span to avoid any possibility of confusion.
