Chapter 4 - Horizontal empennage
4.1 - Assembly preparation
Page 28
After marking the position of the spar and ribs it is a good time to prepare the
cladding areas for gluing. Take a piece of 80 sandpaper and roughen the areas around the
spar and ribs on the top and bottom liners. A gentle sanding is all that is needed to give
the resin a good bonding surface. Sand the area within 2 inches of each rib. Sand the area
2 inches from the front of the back of the spar to the rear edge (hinge line) of the stabilizer.
4.1.1
Horizontal stabilizer spar
Locate the horizontal stabilizer spar (C123) and remove the
peel ply
from the inside.
Find and mark the center line. Measure 57 inches to the right and left of the centerline
and trim excess material so that the spar has a total length of 114 inches. Clean and sand
the top and bottom surfaces for gluing. Align the back side of the spar 1.5 inches from the
elevator separation line.
