Before the X-ray machine can be installed and operated on the work
premises in Canada, the following actions must be taken:
•
Contact your federal/provincial/territorial radiation protection
authority and give advanced notice of the installation.
•
Within 48 hours of installation, a radiation leakage test must be
performed by a qualified person to ensure the regulatory limit is not
exceeded. (0.5 mR per hour at 5.0 cms from all external surfaces of
the device.)
•
Prepare, sign, and date a radiation report (survey) that states
quantitatively the radiation levels measured on all surfaces of the
machine.
•
Attach a copy of the validated calibration certificate for the survey
meter used and forward both to your federal/provincial/territorial
authority.
•
Retain a copy of both documents for your records.
Before any
X-ray
machine can be installed and operated on the work
premises in the United States, the following actions must take place:
•
Contact your State Health Department Authority and give advance
notice of the planned installation;
•
Follow the rules outlined by state, government, and local authorities
for radiation examination; and
•
A
Critical Radiation Survey
must be carried out and recorded by a
qualified person to certify the machine is safe to use (usually a
Thermo Fisher Scientific
Service Technician.)
X-ray
s are part of the electromagnetic radiation spectrum. This spectrum
includes radio waves, microwaves, infrared, the visible spectrum, ultra
violet and gamma radiation.
X-ray
s are a short wavelength of the order
of 10 - 10
10
meters.
X-ray
s are also called ionizing radiation because of
the way they interact with matter.
X-ray
s are produced in the
EZx
by means of a cathode ray tube, which is
similar to the tube of a television. Electrons hit a metal target at high
speed and generate
X-ray
s. Over 95% of this energy is converted to heat.
