Package Edge Padding

Package Edge Padding
Thermo Fisher Scientific
REC 4132 Rev E
The pad values are used to overcome package photo eye triggering
variances that are package dependant when part of the package is not
scanned because the package edge does not block the photo eye.
Example:
A tapered end of a package on the belt does not trigger the
photo eye until it is able to completely block the photo eye but the actual
leading edge of the package may be well past the photo eye. In this case,
the
Leading Edge Pad
would be increased to include the portion of the
package in front of the photo eye when it triggers.
The pad values are also used to over come a difference between the belt
positions of when the photo eye becomes active at the start of the
package and when it becomes inactive at the end of a package as it
passes in front of the photo eye. This value is often the width of the
detector.
These 3 values are interrelated in that the Leading and Trailing Edge Pad
values take up space inside the minimum gap. To provide some time for
the system to complete processing the package data a 10 mm gap
between packages is required. So the sum of the two pad values must be
less than or equal to the minimum gap setting less 10 mm.

When a change is made to either of the pad values, the maximum value
that can be entered is determined by the current value of the Minimum
Package Gap and the other Pad value. If a larger pad value is needed
than the current maximum, increase the Minimum Package Gap by the
necessary amount. The pad values can have a value up to a maximum of
50 mm.
The system default values are:
Minimum Package Gap = 35 mm
Leading Edge Pad = 5 mm
Trailing Edge Pad = 15 mm
These values account for an approximate 10 mm difference between the
package photoeye active belt position and the inactive belt position plus
5 mm of pad on each end to assure the entire package is scanned. These
values cover most packages.
