Appendix D: Using Sound Recorder
The Sound Recorder
Sound Recorder is a Windows 2000 built-in application for recording, playing and modifying digital audio files.
Because it is built into Windows 2000, it is used to edit sound in the workstation as well.
The Sound Recorder can be accessed by a number of different facilities of the workstation. It is used to record
linked voice and sound files, as well as to record speech files for the speech annunciation features of the worksta-
tion.
The application specific information for each of these uses is covered in related sections of the manual. Informa-
tion about speech annunciation can be found in section 3.5.6. Information concerning linked voice and sound
files can be found in section 3.4.5. This section covers only information specific to the Sound Recorder and its
various sound editing functions.
Figure D-1: The Sound Recorder
The Sound Recorder's main (and only) screen consists of a transport controls, position counter, length readout,
wave display, and pull down menus.
Transport Controls
The transport controls are the main buttons that control the Sound Recorder. The transport controls are, from left to
right, Seek to Start (Rewind), Seek to End (Fast Forward), Play, Stop, and Record.
Seek to Start and Seek to End move to the beginning and ending (respectively) of the wave file. Play causes the file
to be output to the standard audio output (usually attached to speakers). The Stop button stops playback or
recording, but it retains the position pointer. Record causes the Sound Recorder to begin recording. What is
recorded depends on the configuration of the system's sound facilities, but generally pressing Record will begin
recording from the microphone input (until Stop is pressed).
Position Counter
The position counter consists of a numerical display that shows the position in seconds, and a sliding bar that
displays an arbitrary (but proportional) movement through the digital sound file. By clicking and dragging the
slider, it is possible to track freely backwards and forwards through the file. The numerical position display will
change with the fader.
