Appendix C: Terminology Index
C
A
Absolute Address
- The absolute address is the actual physical address of a device on the network. An
absolute address is a 14 character string that consists of a three digit node ID, a three digit subnode ID, and an 8
character (alphanumeric) device ID.
Access Control Event
- An event issued by card access reader panels, such as a card swipe event or an invalid
card read.
Alarm Server
- An alarm server, also known as a Local Area Server is a server that communicates information
between the Echelon device network and the Event Manager. Alarm Servers also perform the translation between
Echelon and TCP/IP. (See UniNet System Architecture)
Alarm Threshold
- Alarm Thresholds allow analog alarm points to be inserted at different levels in the reporting
range of the device. When an analog value is reported for a device it is compared to the thresholds. If the reported
value falls between the first high and first low thresholds the device remains in a normal state. As the value rises
and falls it will cause an alarm state in the device when it reaches a threshold value.
Alias ID
- An alias ID is a 14 character name for a device that is custom defined by the administrator. Alias IDs
can be used in place of Absolute IDs to make identification of the device easier for the operator. Alias ID is also
referred to as the Display ID.
Analog Devices
- Analog Devices are devices with one or more continuously variable values that are
inter-
preted
into states by the workstation software based on configurable ranges. An example of an analog device is an
HVAC sensor, which continuously reports values such as temperature and humidity.
B
BCI
- BCI stands for Building Communications Interface. A BCI is a device that acts as an interface between a
wide area server (and thus the workstation) and a remote network. All devices for a remote network can be
attached to one BCI, which then communicates by either dial up modem or X.25 with the Wide Area Server.
Bitmap (.BMP)
- BMP is an extension which stands for bitmap. Bitmaps are files that hold basic image data in
the form of a grid of pixels, each with a certain color. Bitmaps are the standard method of importing and transport-
ing image type information. Bitmap files each have a specific size in pixels. Because of this, they may degrade in
quality if they are zoomed or re-sized.
Boolean
- A boolean is a binary value that is either on or off. Examples include checkboxes and other options
that require only one of two settings.
C
Card Reader
- A card reader is a device that reads a magnetic strip or weigand card and reports the
information to a card reader NION (such as the 2DRN). Card Readers are used for access control.
CCTV
- CCTV stands for Closed Circuit Television. A CCTV system is a system of cameras, monitors, and control-
lers that provide live video feeds to and from various parts of a site. The workstation has the option of controlling
CCTV functions from the workstation, including viewing of live video feeds.
