24. Crane operation
Precautions on derricking and lowering the boom
・
Work the lever gently.
Sudden lever operation causes strong shocks in the structure of the crane, particularly when a
load is suspended, so work with care.
・
The working radius increases as the boom lowers, possibly causing an overload which could
tip the crane, so proceed with caution.
・
Never try to drag a load sideway or toward the crane by derricking the boom.
・
Do not extend your hands or head outside the left window.
・
Rapid, careless derricking and lowering of the boom causes the hook to swing and strike the
underside of the boom, making dents and deformation which harm the boom. Be particularly
careful when the boom angle is large and when the hook is close to the boom top.
・
If the boom angle is lowered below the critical
angle, such as when extending the boom or
attaching a jib, the crane can tip over even if it
is not lifting a load. For more information
about the critical angle, refer to the "lifting
capacity chart".
・
If the boom is derricked when the crane is overloaded, the ACS emits a voice warning and
warning sound to warn that the crane is overloaded, but does not automatically stop the
operation.
This allows derricking the boom to avoid danger (
by reducing the working radius
) in cases of
accidental overloading during normal crane operation.
However, never use derricking the boom, which is not automatically stopped, as a substitute
for picking or pulling operations with a winch, just because such operations are automatically
stopped.
It still means the crane is overloaded and there is a risk of damaging the boom or breaking the
wire rope.
