Configuring Network Information Services
Network Information Services are databases that provide simple management and
administration of Unix-based networks. These databases can provide details about users and
groups. They also can contain information about individual client machines, along with their IP
address and host name which facilitates authentication for users that log into clients on the
network. LDAP and NIS, formerly known as Yellow Pages (YP), are both capable of providing
Network Information Services.
Titan can utilize Network Information Services and easily integrate into environments running
either LDAP or NIS. Using the Network Information Services, Titan can perform the following:
•
Retrieve NFS user and group account information
•
Name services for resolving host names to IP addresses
•
(FTP) authentication
Benefits of Using LDAP
Many organizations are moving towards LDAP and replacing their existing NIS infrastructure
with the more reliable, scalable and secure system that LDAP provides. Using LDAP instead of
NIS to provide Network Information Services can provide the following advantages:
•
Better information accuracy because of LDAP’s more frequent data synchronization of
current and replicated data.
•
Encryption of communication using Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) and Transport Layer
Security (TLS).
•
Authentication of connection to the LDAP database, as opposed to NIS, which allows
anonymous access to its database.
Note:
LDAP cannot be used to resolve NIS Netgroups. If Netgroups are
required, local Netgroups must be used.
The next section discusses how to enable and configure NIS and LDAP services using the Web
Manager.
