Load Balancing and Failure Recovery
The following diagram illustrates a simplified storage configuration, showing how each storage
subsystem can be used through one of two FC paths.
The server automatically routes FC traffic to individual System Drives over either of the two FC
paths, thus distributing the load across the two FC switches and, when possible, across dual
active/active RAID controllers. Load balancing can also be configured by identifying a “preferred
FC path” for each System Drive. Should a failure occur in one of the two FC paths from the
server to the RAID storage subsystem, the server can recover automatically by moving all of the
disk I/O activity to the other FC link. Should the FC link become active again, the server will
automatically redistribute the load.
Load balancing is configured from the
Command Line Interface
(CLI), using the
sdpath
command. For more information, run
man sdpath
. This command can also be used to
determine what FC path is used to communicate to each System Drive.
