Performing NDMP Backups
System Administration Manual
309
The most common examples of how NDMP can be used are:
•
Backing up (recovering) data on a Titan SiliconServer to (from) an Ethernet attached
NDMP tape library.
•
Backing up (recovering) data on a Titan SiliconServer without a Tape Library to (from) a
second BlueArc Storage Server that has a Tape Library attached.
•
Using a utility, such as BlueArc’s
Accelerated Data Copy
(ADC)
or
Data Replication
to
copy file systems between BlueArc Storage Servers.
Titan also supports backups done over network protocols such as NFS or CIFS but only NDMP
will preserve security settings in a mixed protocol environment including Virtual Volume and
quota information.
When using NDMP, Titan uses snapshots to backup data consistently and without being
affected by on-going file activity. Snapshots also facilitate incremental backups. However, if so
desired, it is also possible to backup data without using snapshots.
Configuring NDMP
This section describes the NDMP configuration and support that the system provides.
Note:
This section does not explain how to set up the storage management
application or tape libraries. Consult the documentation that accompanies
the application and tape library for setup instructions.
