BlueArc Data Migrator
Titan supports multiple storage technologies, with different performance and cost
characteristics. In order to take full advantage of
Multi-Tiered Storage (MTS),
data should be
organized using a tiered hierarchy of importance and need. BlueArc Data Migrator makes this
possible.
There are five key reasons to use Data Migrator with Titan:

Cost-Efficient Storage Utilization
- Titan's Data Migrator best utilizes the MTS
architecture by maximizing space utilization on higher performing and higher cost fibre
channel based primary storage. Using Data Migrator, newer or routinely accessed data
can be retained on primary storage, while older, less-accessed, or less performance
critical data can be migrated to cost-efficient, but slower ATA based secondary storage.

Easy Configuration
- Titan deploys Data Migrator using logical policies that use simple
building blocks of rules to classify files as available for migration. Titan has provisions
for establishing rules and pre-conditions where a file's size, type (for example, all .mp3
files), access history, etc. can be used as criteria for migrating files.

Discreet Migration
- Migrations from primary to secondary storage are handled as
automated background tasks with minimal impact on server performance. While
migrations are in progress, all data can continue to be accessed as normal.

Client Transparency
- Files migrated off of primary storage are replaced by a link. While
using only 1 KB of space, the link otherwise looks and functions identically to the
original file. When the link is accessed, the file contents are transparently retrieved from
its location on secondary storage. To the client workstation, it is indistinguishable
whether the file’s contents have been migrated or still remain on primary storage.

Maximizing Storage Efficiency through Migration Reports
- Migration reports are
created at the end of each migration cycle. Studying these reports, file usage and space
consumption patterns become more apparent. Furthermore, migration possibilities can
be gauged by scheduling Data Migrator
test runs
where reports can be produced without
an actual migration taking place. Armed with this knowledge, more aggressive migration
policies can be created to free up more primary space, maximizing the efficiency and
functionality of BlueArc's Multi-Tiered Storage system.
