Removing CIFS Names
CIFS names can be removed from Titan’s configuration by deleting them from the list of
configured CIFS names. When ADS CIFS names are removed, the corresponding computer
account in the Active Directory is also removed. Computer accounts in NT 4 Domains must be
deleted manually through Server Manager.
Note:
At least one CIFS name must be configured on Titan to support
connections from Windows clients. As a result, if the last configured CIFS
name is removed, Windows clients will no longer be able to access the server
over CIFS.
Using NetBIOS
When NetBIOS is enabled, it allows NetBIOS and WINS use on this server. If this server
communicates by name with computers that use older Windows versions, this setting is
required. By default, Titan is configured to use NetBIOS.
Disabling NetBIOS has a few advantages:
•
It simplifies the transport of SMB traffic.
•
It removes WINS and NetBIOS broadcast as a means of name resolution.
•
It standardizes name resolution on DNS for file and printer sharing.
Disabling NetBIOS
Before choosing to disable NetBIOS, verify that there is no need to use NetBIOS, WINS, or legacy
NetBT-type applications for this network connection. In other words, if this server
communicates only with computers that run Windows 2000, Windows XP, or Windows 2003,
disabling NetBIOS will be transparent and may result in a performance benefit.
NetBIOS should only be disabled if a reliable DNS infrastructure is in place. Once disabled,
clients will only be able to communicate with Titan by its name through DNS.
Dynamic DNS
registration of CIFS names and IP addresses is an easy way to ensure reliable connectivity.
Caution:
Disabling NetBIOS can cause connectivity problems for users of
older versions of Windows.
