Medical Gas Alarm Network System Interaction
The information and figures in this section are an overview of typical wiring
conventions and the interaction between components of a typical MedPlus
TotalAlert® Alarm Network (see figure 3-1 on page 3–7).
When the installation of the MedPlus TotalAlert® Alarm Network is done prop-
erly, the wiring complies with National Electrical Code® (NEC®) requirements
and the following general requirements:
• Electric service to each alarm panel must be supplied from the emergency (or
essential power) electrical power system.
• Signal wires must be a minimum of 22-gauge, stranded, shielded, twisted-
pair.
If the wire runs in or passes through an area within the ceiling or air duct desig-
nated as
Return or Supply Air , plenum wire may be required. Wire in these
spaces must comply with different requirements for temperature ratings, smoke
ratings, etc.
• Signal wiring must be less than 4500\q (1372 m) in length from a signal
device to an alarm.
• Signal wiring should not run near any wiring carrying AC input power (typi-
cally 120V), especially in the same conduit.
• If signal wiring conduit must cross the AC input power wiring conduit, cross
them at a 90° angle.
• All wiring must comply with NEC® requirements.
• The MedPlus TotalAlert® Alarm Network Conversion Kits use a Class 2
power supply as the kits are listed by UL. Therefore, all sensor and switch
wiring receiving power from this system must meet the requirements as
defined in article 725 of the NEC® requirements.
