Chapter 1: Introduction

Glossary of Component Terms

The codes in both the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 99 and
CAN/CSA-Z305.1-92 standards refer to the main components of alarm systems.
However, they use different naming conventions. Where applicable in the follow-
ing definitions, the CAN/CSA-Z305.1-92 name is in parentheses following the
NFPA 99 name.

1. Master Alarm (Emergency Alarm)

—The Master Alarm monitors the opera-

tion and condition of medical gas source supplies and reserve supplies. If the
Network Communications Board is installed in the Area Alarm, the Master
Alarm can monitor the operation and condition of MedPlus TotalAlert® Area
Alarm Modules.

There are two dry-contact relays featured on the Master Alarm that provide
signals to outputs. The outputs can be wired to either the normally-closed or
normally-open contacts. They are located on the Master Alarm Breakout P.C.
Board. One is marked MAIN ALARM, and the other is marked AUX
ALARM. For wiring diagrams, refer to the foldouts at the rear of this manual.

• MAIN ALARM RELAY

•

When the Master Alarm is in alarm condition, this relay activates.

•

When the Master Alarm is silenced, this relay deactivates.

•

When the Master Alarm power is off, this relay activates until the power
comes back on.

• AUX ALARM RELAY

•

When the Master Alarm is in alarm condition, this relay activates.

•

When the Master Alarm is silenced, this relay stays activated.

•

When the Master Alarm condition is remedied, this relay deactivates.

The Master Alarm also has an output relay that can be used to interface with a
building automation system.

According to the NFPA 99 standard, two Master Alarms are required for

Level 1

facilities. One is usually located in the facility engineer’s office, and the

other is located in an area that has 24-hour supervision. The Master Alarm con-
sists of the Master Alarm Front Panel and the Master Alarm Rough-In Assembly.

NOTE:
BeaconMedæs recommends using a separate pair of wires for each input to the
Master Alarm. Also, even if the network communications option (alarm Web
page accessibility) is not initially selected, run Cat-5 Ethernet cable to each
rough-in assembly. It will cost the facility more to run the cable after installation.
