ing o v e r opening at top o f transm ission to prevent
entry o f d irt o r other fo reig n m aterial.
4. D rain lubricant from transm ission.
5. Disconnect speedom eter cable fro m transm ission
adapter.
6. D isconnect clutch control linkage.
7. D isconnect and rem o ve parking brake le v e r and
con trols (if used).
8. D isconnect p r o p e lle r shaft fro m tran sm ission as
d escrib ed in “ P R O P E L L E R S H A F T S ” (Section 4) of
this manual.
9. R em ove engine ground strap and battery cable sup
p ort clip i f attached to tran sm ission o r clutch
housing.
10. If v e h icle is equipped with pow er ta k e-o ff, rem ove
unit and con trols fro m transm ission. P la c e p ro te c
tiv e co verin g o v e r opening.
11. P osition a suitable d olly o r jack under veh icle and
adjust to c a r r y weight o f transm ission.
NOTE:
On v eh icles which have the re a r engine
mountings attached to the clutch housing (except
m odels equipped with “ A p ro n " type flyw heel
housing), position a suitable dolly jack under the
flyw h eel housing and adjust to c a rry the weight
o f the engine.
R em ove re a r engine mounts.
12. R em ove bolts attaching tran sm ission to re a r c r o s s
m em ber support b rackets (when used).
13. V isu ally inspect to determ in e i f other equipment,
lin es o r brackets must be rem oved to p erm it r e
m oval o f the tran sm ission .
14. R em ove clutch housing-to-engine flyw heel housing
mounting bolts, except on m odels with “ A p r o n " type
flyw h eel housing.
NOTE:
On m odels equipped with “ A p ro n " type
flyw h eel housing, rem o ve flyw heel housing pan
and tra n s m issio n -to -fly w h eel housing mounting
bolts. Be sure to support the clutch re le a s e
bearin g and support assem bly during rem oval
o f the tran sm ission fro m the flyw h eel housing.
T h is w ill prevent the bearin g and support a s
sem bly fro m fa llin t-ou t o f the flyw h eel housing
when the tran sm ission is rem oved.
15. M ove the tran sm ission assem bly straight away from
the engine, using ca re to keep the tran sm ission main
d riv e gea r shaft in alignm ent with the clutch disc
hub.
IM PORTANT:
When rem ovin g the tra n sm is
sion, do not allow weight o f the tran sm ission to
hang on clutch disc hub, as disc w ill becom e
d istorted, serio u sly affectin g clutch operation.
16. When tran sm ission is fre e fro m engine, lo w er the
tran sm ission and m ove fro m under the veh icle.
17. If d esired , a carefu l check o f clutch components
should be made a fte r the tran sm ission has been
rem oved.
If the clutch re q u ire s rep a ir, r e fe r to
“ C L U T C H E S " in this manual b efo re transm ission is
rein sta lled in the veh icle.
Installation
1. Apply a light coating o f High T em p eratu re G rease
to the main d riv e gea r bearin g reta in er and splined
portion o f transm ission main d rive g e a r shaft to a s
sure fre e m ovem ent o f clutch and tran sm ission com
ponents during assem bly.
2. Shift the transm ission into high gear.
3. Mount tran sm ission on dolly o r jack and m ove into
position under the veh icle.
NO TE:
On m odels equipped with “ A p r o n " type
flyw h eel housing, position the clutch re le a s e
bearin g and support assem bly inside the fly
wheel housing. Be sure the clutch fork p ro p erly
engages the clutch re le a s e bearing.
4. A lig n the tran sm ission main d rive gea r shaft with
the clutch disc hub by rotating the transm ission
companion flange. M ove the transm ission forw ard,
guiding the main d riv e gear shaft into the clutch disc
splines.
IM P O R T A N T :
A void springing the clutch when
the tran sm ission is being installed to the engine.
Do not fo rc e the tran sm ission into clutch disc
splines. Do not let tran sm ission drop o r hang
unsupported in the splined hub of the clutch disc.
5. Install
clutch housing-to-engine flyw heel housing
mounting bolts and lock w ashers (except m odels
equipped
with
“ A p r o n "
type
flyw h eel housing).
Tighten bolts to 25 to 30 ft. lbs.
6. On veh icles equipped with “ A p r o n " type flyw heel
housing,
install
tra n sm issio n -to -flyw h eel housing
mounting bolts and lock w ashers. Tighten bolts to
60 to 65 ft. lbs.
7. If the re a r engine mounts w ere rem oved, rein sta ll
the mounts as co vered in ENGINE MOUNTINGS
(Section 6) o f this manual. Be sure a ll mounting
bolts a re p ro p e rly torqued.
8. Install bolts attaching transm ission to re a r c r o s s
m em ber support (when used). Tighten bolts to 80
to 100 ft. lbs.
9. If veh icle is equipped with pow er ta k e-o ff, rein stall
unit and con trols on transm ission.
10. Install engine ground strap and battery cable sup
port clip, i f attached to tran sm ission o r clutch
housing.
11. Connect p ro p e lle r shaft to tran sm ission as d e
scrib ed in “ P R O P E L L E R S H A F T S " (Section 4) o f
this manual.
12. Connect parking brake le v e r and controls (if used).
Adjust brake as outlined in “ P A R K IN G B R A K E "
(Section 5) o f this manual.
13. Reconnect clutch control linkage.
14. C o n n e c t
speedom eter cable
to
a d a p t e r
at
transm ission.
15. If other equipment (exhaust pipe, support brackets,
etc.) was rem oved, rein sta ll these parts.
16. Shift the tran sm ission into “ N E U T R A L " . On m odels
with conventional gea rsh ift le v e r, rein sta ll gearsh ift
le v e r and control tow er assem bly. Tighten bolts on
Spicer tran sm ission to 40 to 50 ft. lbs. Tighten
bolts on C lark transm ission to 25 to 30 ft. lbs.
NOTE:
On conventional cab m odels with New
P r o c e s s tran sm ission , install g ea rsh ift le v e r
using T o o l J-8109 as shown in Figu re 3C.
On conventional cab m odels with RT510 trans
m ission, follow in g installations o f gearsh ift le v e r
