Removal
1. P la c e ve h ic le on hoist.
2. R em ove cotter pins fro m b all studs and rem o ve cas
tella ted nuts.
3. T o rem o ve outer b a ll stud, tap on steerin g arm at
tie rod end with a ham m er while using a heavy ham
m e r o r s im ila r tool as a backing (fig. 23).
On C -P 1 0 -2 0 -3 0 s e r ie s , rem o ve inner ball stud
fro m rela y rod using sam e procedu re as d escrib ed
in Step 2.
T o rem ove tie rod ends fro m tie rod loosen clam p
bolts and unscrew end assem b lies.
The tie rod sockets a re sealed units (except 11000#
a x le s ) and cannot be disassem bled.
Disassembly ( 1 1 , 0 0 0 # A xles)
1. R em ove the seal and dust c o ver fro m the b a ll stud.

P r y out the lo w er snap ring and rem ove the snap
rin g, end plug and spring.
3. Push the ball stud out of housing along with the
p la stic washer and ball stud bearing.
4.
R em ove the b all stud seat.
Inspection ( 1 1 , 0 0 0 # A xles)
1. U se a suitable solvent to thoroughly clean a ll parts.
W ipe o r blow parts dry.
2.
Inspect p arts fo r w ear o r damage and rep lace if
n ecessary.
3. Check the spring fo r distortion o r collapsed coils.
Assembly ( 1 1 , 0 0 0 # Axles)
1. In stall the b all stud seat o v e r the stud and install
both in the rod socket.
2.
In stall the bearing.
3. In stall the p lastic w asher, being carefu l not to dam
age o r d istort it.
4.
P la c e the spring in the housing; la rg e end of spring
against the bearing.
5. In stall the end plug and the snap ring, making sure
the snap ring is seated in the socket groove.
6. P la c e the dust co v e r and seal onto the threaded end
of the b a ll stud.
Installation
1. If the tie rod ends w ere rem oved , lu bricate the tie
rod threads with E P C hassis lube and in stall ends on
tie rod making sure both ends are threaded an equal
distance fro m the tie rod.
2.
Make sure that threads on b a ll studs and in b a ll stud
nuts a re p e rfe c tly clean and smooth. Check condi
tion of b a ll stud seals; rep la ce if n ecessary.
NOTE:
If threads are not clean and smooth,
b a ll studs m ay turn in tie rod ends when at
tem pting to tighten nut.
3. In stall b a ll studs in steerin g arm s and r e la y rod.
4.
In stall b all stud nut, tighten and in stall cotter pins.
Lu bricate tie rod ends.
5. R em ove veh icle fro m hoist.
6. Adjust to e -in as d escrib ed in Section 3.
