On v eh icles with parking brake drum assem bly r e
tained to output shaft by a nut on shaft end, install
nut and torque to 300 foot pounds. Install c o tter pin.
4. P osition p ro p e lle r shaft flange against brake drum
(o r output shaft flan ge). If rem oved, attach p ro p e lle r
shaft cen ter bearin g hanger bracket to cro ssm em b er.
Replace
a ll lock w ashers and nuts and tighten
secu rely.
5. Install brake band and adjust brake as d irected in
B rake Band Installation.
PARKING BRAKE-PROPELLER SHAFT INTERNAL
E X P A N D IN G TYPE (Fig. 6 8 and 6 9 )
Removal
1. R em ove the p ro p e lle r shaft. See Section 4.
2. Rem ove the brake drum.
NOTE:
It may be n ecessa ry to back o ff the shoe
adjustment b e fo re rem ovin g the drum.
3. Rem ove the two pull back springs.
4. Rem ove the guide plate fro m anchor pin.
5. Rem ove shoe hold down cups, springs, and washers
fro m hold down pins - R em ove pins.
6. P u ll brake shoe and lining a ssem b lies away from
anchor pin and rem ove the strut and spring.
7. L ift the brake shoes and linings with the adjusting nut
and bolt and connecting spring o ff the backing plate.
8. M ove the shoes toward each other until the adjusting
bolt and connecting sprin g drop o ff.
9. Rem ove the clip holding the brake le v e r to the p r i
m ary shoe (shoe with short lin in g).
10. C om press the spring on the brake cable and rem ove
the cable fro m the le v e r .
11. If n ecessary to rem ove the anchor pin, straighten the
washer fro m pin hex and rein forcem en t. Rem ove r e
in forcem en t and w asher with anchor pin.
12. If n ecessa ry to rem ove the cable, com press tongs on
cable and pull assem bly out o f the hole in the backing
plate.
13. If n ecessary to rem ove the backing plate, rem ove the
transm ission flange nut and tran sm ission output
flange. Rem ove bolts holding the backing plate to
bearing reta in er and rem ove the backing plate.
Inspection
Replace any worn o r broken parts.
Installation
1. P la ce the backing plate in position on the re a r b e a r
ing reta in er and fasten with four bolts. Torque bolts
to 24 foot-pounds.
2. Install tran sm ission output flange on spline of m ain
shaft and fasten with flange nut. Torqu e nut to 100
foot pounds.
3. Install cable assem bly fro m back o f backing plate.
Push reta in er through hole in backing plate until
tangs secu rely grip the inner side o f the plate.
4. P la ce w asher and rein forcem en t o v e r the threaded
end o f anchor pin. Hold anchor pin nut (fla t side
against flange on backing p late) in position behind
backing plate and in s e rt threaded end of anchor pin
fro m front side. Thread the anchor pin into nut and
tighten secu rely. (140 footpounds torqu e). Bend tang
o f w asher o v e r rein fo rcem en t and side o f washer
o v e r hex o f anchor pin.
