Drum D em ountable-Type (Fig. 4 4 )
Replacem ent
The dem ountable-type drum may be separated fro m the
hub and rem oved fro m the v e h ic le without disturbing the
axle shaft and hub. The drum is held to the hub by coun
tersunk, slotted screw s, which a re e a s ily rem oved with a
s c re w d r iv e r .
D ru m -N o n d em ou n tab le-T yp e (Fig. 4 5 )
Replacem ent
Construction, o f the nondemountable-type hub and drum
assem bly, is such that replacem en t cannot be a ccom
plished with the hub assem bly in stalled on the veh icle.
1. Separate the drum and hub by rem ovin g the dru m -to-
hub retaining b olts, hub stud nuts, o r by p ressin g out
the wheel studs, as applicable.
2. P o sitio n brake drum to hub assem bly, making certain
that all drain holes a re in alignm ent.
3. Apply a light, even coating o f sealin g compound to the
hub o il d efle c to r contact su rface, and position d e
fle c to r to drum.
4. Install drum -to-hub retaining bolts, hub stud nuts, or
p re s s wheel studs into drum, as applicable.
W h eel Bolt
Replacem ent.
W heel b olts a re s e rra te d and may also be swaged in
p lace;
how ever, replacem en t procedu re rem ains the
sam e fo r both types o f installation.
F ig . 5 4 — W h e e l B o lt R e p la c e m e n t
P r e s s bolts out o f hub flange (as illu strated in F igu re
54) and p re s s new b olts into place, making sure they a re

Hub Stud
Replacement
Hub studs can be rem oved and rep laced by using a con

studs a re fir m ly bottom ed in holes and that threads a re
not damaged during installation.
O il Seal Sleeve and Bearing Thrust Spacer
Replacement
The hub inner b earin g spacer and sle e v e assem bly
should be inspected when the hub and b earin g assem bly is
rem oved fro m the axle housing (fig. 56).
If inspection dictates the need fo r replacem en t, p ry the
s le e v e and spacer assem b ly fro m the housing, being
c a refu l not to damage machined su rface o f axle housing.
P r e s s a new bearin g sp acer into the I.D. o f a new
s le e v e - spacer should seat against bottom o f s le e v e .
CAUTIO N:
The O.D. o f the s leeve is the run-
ning surface fo r the hub o il seal. Use extrem e
ca re to p reven t dam age to this surface when in-
stalling the b earin g spacer (fig. 64).
Tap the sle e v e assem bly onto the axle housing until the
bearin g spacer contacts shoulder on housing.
W h eel Hub O il Seal
Replacement
P r y old seal fro m its location in the hub b ore, using
c a re so as not to dam age bore su rface. Thoroughly clean
a ll o il and fo reign m atter fro m seal contact area in hub
