TRANSM ISSIO N
r e p l a c e m e n t
Removal
1. R aise truck on hoist and rem ove o il pan drain plug to
drain oil.
NOTE:
If d esired , the o il may be drained a fter
tran sm ission rem ova l.
2. Disconnect the vacuum modulator line and the speed
om eter d riv e cable fittin g at the tran sm ission . T ie
lin es out of the way.
3. Disconnect manual and T .V . control le v e r rods fro m
transm ission.
4. Disconnect prop shaft fro m transm ission.
5. Install suitable tran sm ission lift equipment to jack or
other liftin g d evice and attach on transm ission.
6. Disconnect engine r e a r mount on tran sm ission exten
sion, then rem ove the tran sm ission support c r o s s
m em ber.
7. R em ove

s c r i b e
flyw h eel-
co n v e rte r relationship f o r assem bly, then rem ove the
fly w h e e l-to -c o n v e rte r attaching bolts.
8. Support engine at the o il pan r a il with a jack or
other suitable b race capable of supporting the engine
w eight when the tran sm ission is rem oved.
9. L o w e r the r e a r of the tra n sm issiin s ligh tly so that
the upper tran sm ission housing-to-engine attaching
bolts can be reached using a u n iversa l socket and a
long extension. R em ove upper bolts.

rem ain d er

transm ission
housing-to-
engine attaching bolts.
11, R em ove the tran sm ission by m oving it sligh tly to the
re a r and downward, then rem ove fro m beneath the
veh icle and tra n s fe r to a work bench.
NOTE:
O bserve c o n verter when m oving the
tra n sm issiin rearw ard .
If it does not m ove
with transm ission, p ry it fr e e o f flyw h eel b efore
proceeding.
C A U TIO N :
Keep fron t of tran sm ission upward
to p reven t the c o n verter fro m fa llin g out. Install
c o n verter holding T o o l J-9549 im m ed iately o r a
s im ila r tool constructed as shown in F igu re
4PG, or, in an em ergen cy, a length of strong
w ire may be used) a fte r re m o v a l fro m the
engine.
Installation
1. Mount tran sm ission on tran sm ission liftin g equip
ment in stalled on jack o r other liftin g device.
2. R em ove co n verter holding tool.

3. R aise tran sm ission into p lace at r e a r of engine and
in stall tran sm ission case to engine upper mounting
bolts, then in stall rem ain der of the mounting bolts.
Torqu e bolts to 25-30 ft. lbs.
4. R em ove support fro m beneath engine, then ra ise
re a r of tran sm ission to fin al position.
5. If scrib ed during rem oval, align s c rib e m arks on
flyw h eel and co n verter c o ver. In stall co n verter to
fly w h eel attaching bolts. Torque bolts to 30-35 ft. lbs.
6. In stall flyw h eel cover.

8. Rem ove tran sm ission lift equipment.
9. Connect p ro p e lle r shaft to transm ission.
10. Connect manual and T .V . con trol le v e r rods to
transm ission.
11. Connect vacuum modulator line, and speedom eter
d riv e cable to transm ission.
12. R e fill tran sm ission through f i l l e r tube, and fo llo w
ing the recom m ended procedu re p rovid ed e a r lie r in
this section.
13. Check tran sm ission fo r p ro p e r operation and fo r
leakage. Check and, if n ecessa ry, adjust linkage.
14. L o w e r truck and rem ove fro m hoist.

p erfo rm e d fr o m underneath the v e h icle without rem ovin g
the P o w e rg lid e ; th eir s e r v ic e procedu re is c o vered in the
Overhaul Manual and is not repeated h ere. R e fe r to the

s e r v ic e operations not co v e re d here.
