b. Support shaft yoke in a bench v is e o r on a short
length o f pipe.
c. Using soft d r ift and ham m er, d riv e on one end of
trunnion bearin g just fa r enough to d riv e opposite
bearin g fro m yoke.
d. Support the oth er side of yoke in bench v is e and
d riv e other b earin g out using b rass d r ift on end o f
trunnion.
e. On other joints, rem ove trunnions fro m yokes in
s im ila r manner.
f . Rem ove trunnion.
g. Clean and inspect b earin gs, relu b rica te with a
high m elting point wheel bearin g type grea se.
h. Replace trunnion and p ress new o r relu bricated
b earin gs into yokes and o v e r trunnion hubs fa r
enough to in stall lock rings.
i . Hold trunnion in one hand and tap yoke ligh tly to
seat bearin gs against lock rin gs.
9. R em ove axle s lin g ers by placing into v is e and tapping
o ff o r by rem o va l on p ress.
NOTE:
W henever spindle seals a re replaced
the axle shaft s lin g e rs should also be replaced.
10. R em ove tie rod.
a. R em ove c o tter pins.
b. Loosen tie rod nuts and tap on nut, with rawhide
ham m er to b reak stud loose fro m knuckle arm .
c. Rem ove nuts and disconnect tie rod.
NOTE:
If determ in ed n ecessa ry to rem ove the
steerin g arm , d isca rd the three s e lf locking nuts
and replace with new nuts at assem bly. Torque
to sp ecification s.
11. Rem ove co tter pin fro m upper ball socket nut.
12. Rem ove nuts fro m upper and lo w e r b all sockets.
13. R em ove knuckle assem b ly fro m yoke.
In stall a
wedge type tool between the lo w e r b all stud and the
yoke and tap the tool to rem ove the knuckle a s
sem bly. Repeat as requ ired at the upper b all stud
location.
NOTE:
Do not rem o ve yoke upper b a ll stud ad
justing sle e v e (threaded) unless new b a ll studs
w ill be installed. Loosen s leeve two threads with
sp ecia l T ool J-23447 fo r thread protection -
threads are not hardened.
14. R em ove top and lo w e r sockets fro m knuckle using
J-9519-10 holder and J-23454-1 as a fo rcin g s crew
adapter.
Assembly
NOTE:
A ll knuckle and wheel attachments, in
cluding steerin g, tie rods, etc., are im portant
attaching p arts in that they could affect the p e r
form an ce o f vita l components and s y s t e m s ,
and/or could resu lt in m a jo r rep a ir expense.
They must be replaced with parts o f the same
p a rt numbers o r with equivalent parts i f r e
placem ent becom es n ecessa ry. Do not use r e
placem ent parts o f le s s e r quality o r substitute
design. Torque values must be used as sp ecified
during rea ssem b ly to assure p ro p er retention of
these parts.
N O TE:
Install new ball stud adjusting s le e v e s
whenever new b all studs are installed.
1. In stall bottom b all socket into knuckle. P la ce knuckle
onto h o l d e r T o o l J-9519-10 in the v i s e with
J-23454-2 socket adapter. Be sure bottom socket
(without cotter pin hold in stud end) is straight and
not cocked. F o rc e knuckle onto b a ll socket until
p ro p e rly seated.
2. F o llo w same procedure as Step 1 fo r installin g top
b all socket using same sp ecial tools.
3. Position knuckle with sockets to yoke. Install two
new nuts fin g er tight to top (nut with co tter pin slot)
and bottom studs.
4. Pu ll the knuckle assem bly into the yoke by applying
torque to the bottom b a ll stud nut to sp ecification s.
5. Tighten the yoke upper b all stud adjusting sleeve
(threaded) with sp ecia l T o o l J-23447 to 50 ft. lbs.
6. Torque the upper ball socket nut to 100 ft. lbs. Line
up cotter key hole o f stud with the castelation o r slot
o f the nut. Tighten nut when it is being lined up with
the hole o f the stud. Do Not Loosen Nut. A ssem b le
cotter key.
NO TE:
A ssem b le steerin g arm , i f rem oved,
three stud adapters, and three new nuts. Torque
nuts to 90 ft. lbs. A ssem ble tie rod to knuckle
steerin g arm . Torque nut to 45 ft. lbs. A s s e m
ble co tter key.
7. A ssem ble p ro tective s lin g er (inner) onto shaft. The
outer wheel bearing spindle nut w ill s e rv e as a guide
to assem ble slin g er.
8. P la ce nut in v is e , and s lin g er on end o f shaft. Tap on
shaft with a rawhide ham m er until the s lin g er is
seated.
9. A ssem b le p ro tective slin g e r (outer) onto shaft. One
o f the wheel spindles w ill s e rv e as a starting guide
to assem ble slin g er. Do not use spindle as a p r e s
sing o r d rivin g tool.
NO TE:
Use care not to damage spindle seal
surface on slin ger.
10. A ssem ble axle shaft and joint assem bly into housing.
Spindle Components—Assembly
a. P la ce spindle in v is e on high step and in stall
needle r o lle r bearings using d r iv e r J-8092 and
J-23445.
b. A ssem b le g rea se seal into spindle.
c. A fte r assem bly o f the needle bearin g and o il
seal, pack grea se around the needle bearing and
lip o f the o il seal as full as p ossible.
12. A ssem b le axle shaft and joint assem bly (r e fe r to
A x le-J o in t R ep a irs under ''D is a s s e m b ly ” ), assem ble
bronze thrust washer and spindle to knuckle.
13. A ssem b le backing plate and brake assem bly. Torque
nuts to 45 ft. lbs.

resu lt in m ajor re p a ir expense. It must be r e
