2. Make sure that brake backing plate, w heel cylin der
anchor bolts and cylin d er mounting s c rew s are
torqued to sp ecification s.
3. In stall shoes on hold-dow ns, locating each retractin g
spring so that its long shank is hooked at the anchor
end o f the shoe.
4. In stall fla t w ashers and hold down C -w ash ers.
5. In stall brake shoe return springs with T o o l J-8049.
6. Adjust b ra k es—In itial manual lining adjustment.
a. Back o ff manual adjustment cam s.
b. C enter each shoe, b e fo re installin g drum, by
slid in g shoe up o r down in its anchor slo t until
the leading and tra ilin g edges o f the linings are
equal distance fro m the inner curl o f the brake
mounting plate.
c. Install hub and brake drums as d irected in
Section 3.
d. A t one manual shoe adjuster stud, rotate adjuster
cam stud in the d irection o f fo rw a rd drum ro ta
tion, tightening (do not overtigh ten ) the adjust
ment until the shoe d rags on drum. Back o ff the
adjuster cam stud w hile rotating drum forw ard,
until drag just is re lie v e d .
e. Adjust the second manual shoe adjuster stud in
the sam e manner, fo rw a rd to tighten and r e v e r s e
to r e lie v e drag. (Do not overtigh ten ).
7. L o w er veh icle and rebleed if n ecessa ry.

Rem oval (Fig. 5 6 )
1. Jack up axle.
2. It may be n ecessary to back o ff adjustable starw heels
sligh tly to fr e e grooved drum s. Take ca re not to
back o ff adjustment so much that starw h eel is
jam m ed against the fric tio n ring on the adjuster
s c re w as this may damage the ring.
3. R em ove re a r brake drum as d irected in Section 4.
4. Unhook the two automatic adjuster sprin gs. R em ove
each long adjuster link by pivotin g back the s ta r
w heel cranks until th eir slots align with the link
U-hooks. L ift out links, then slid e th eir S-hooks
fro m the anchor pin cranks. R em ove short links by
rotating anchor cranks until link U-hooks c le a r the
eccen trics on shoe webs, then rem ove th e ir s m a lle r
