le v e l dip stick is located at the righ t r e a r of the engine
com partm ent. F ill with o il s p e c ifie d in Section 0.
In o rd e r to check o il le v e l accu rately, the engine should
be id led with the tran sm ission o il hot and the control
le v e r in neutral (N ) position.
It is im portant that the o il le v e l be maintained no
higher than the " F U L L " m ark on the tran sm ission o il
le v e l gauge. DO N O T O V E R F IL L , fo r when the o il le v e l
is at the fu ll m ark on the dip stick, it is just sligh tly b e
low the planetary gea r unit. If additional o il is added,
brin gin g the o il le v e l above the fu ll m ark, the planetary
unit w ill run in the oil, foam ing and aeratin g the oil. This
aerated o il c a r r ie d through the variou s o il p ressu re pas
sages (lo w s ervo , r e v e r s e s e rv o , clutch apply, con verter,
etc .) m ay cause malfunction of the tran sm ission assem
bly, resu ltin g in cavitation noise in the c o n verter and
im p ro p er band o r clutch application. O verheating might
also occur.
If the tran sm ission is found consisten tly low on oil, a
thorough inspection should be made to find and c o r r e c t
a ll extern al o il leaks.
PERIODIC OIL C H AN G E
The tran sm ission o il should be changed p e rio d ic a lly as
recom m ended in Section 0, and w henever tran sm ission is
to be rem oved fro m the ve h ic le fo r re p a irs .
1. Run engine f o r one minute in neutral p r io r to
changing.
2. Be sure v e h icle is le v e l o r ra is e fro m the re a r only.
3. R em ove the o il pan drain plug and allow o il to drain
thoroughly into a pan o r can.
4. R eplace drain plug and r e f i l l with approxim ately two
and one half quarts of o il sp e c ifie d in Section 0.

rpm with the tran sm ission in N eutral until the
o il w arm s up, then add o il as requ ired to ra is e

M A N U A L SHIFT LINKAGE CHECK & ADJUST
(Figs. 1 and 2)
1. The shift tube and le v e r assem bly must be fr e e in the
m ast jacket. See Section 9 fo r alignm ent of steerin g
column assem bly i f n ecessary.
2. T o check fo r p rop er shift linkage adjustment, lift the
tran sm ission s e le c to r le v e r tow ards the s teerin g
wheel. A llo w the s e le c to r le v e r to be positioned in
d riv e (D ) by the tran sm ission detent.
NOTE:
Do not use the indicator pointer as a
re fe re n c e to position the s e le c to r le v e r . When
p e rfo rm in g linkage adjustment, p oin ter is ad
justed last.
3. R elea se the s e le c to r le v e r . The le v e r should be in
hibited fro m engaging low range unless the le v e r is
lifted .
4. L ift the s e le c to r le v e r towards the s te e rin g wheel,
and allow the le v e r to be positioned in neutral (N ) by
the tran sm ission detent.
5. R elea se the s e le c to r le v e r . The le v e r should now be
inhibited fro m engaging re v e rs e range unless the
le v e r is lifted .
