Counting Method
First review the counting method box, Figure 6-5. Choose either Decay Correct
Administered Dose or Measure Same Reference Dose Before Each Uptake.

When Decay Correct Administered Dose is selected, the capsule must first be measured
before it is administered. Then this same capsule is administered to the patient.
The software will automatically correct the count rate for radioactive decay. Individual
capsules may vary in activity from each other. The decay correct method eliminates any
error introduced by a difference in activity from the capsule administered to the patient, and a
second different capsule used as a standard.
It is the easiest method, since it eliminates the need to recount a capsule each time an
uptake measurement is performed. This method is also the most cost effective since it
eliminates the cost of a second capsule used only as a standard. If your facility uses an
alternate method, try making comparison measurements with your current method and the
decay correct method. Most facilities find that the Decay Correct Administered Dose is the
most convenient method.
When Measure Same Reference Dose Before Each Uptake is chosen, the dosage may be
administered to the patient at any time. Before an uptake measurement is counted, the
software will prompt the user to measure the capsule first, then measure the patient. The
uptake will be calculated from each capsule count. If at any time, you choose not to re-
measure the capsule for subsequent uptake measurements, the software will automatically
decay correct the most recent capsule count for the next uptake calculation.
